Now, with endless fatuous commentary.
Depending on whom you poll, some would say YM has ads — they are in service of fund raising, but as dajiner, they spoil the purity of the reader experience as much as one for True Blood (visually speaking). That there is a morally defensible goal (help school kids!) to the ad doesn’t mean it isn’t using the same logic of “visual distraction from editorial to effect a behavior.” YM isn’t “ad” free — rather, it does not accept payment for promotion, and doesn’t promote (for free or pay) profit-generating enterprises. Again, I’m not trying to parse the superiority of such a stance, but I started by saying I was talking visual presentation.
Well that’s reaching a bit far and if you go down that road even more then NOTHING can be devoid of a “hidden” ad or goal to prevent spoiling the purity of the reader experience. Following your logic, if I just blogged “adaklhfalhfafhsasas” all day long, that could (besides risking a cease and desist from Choire) be seen as an ad in service of WASTING YOUR FUCKING TIME, INC. Actually, I bet people would pay for that.
